Happy Feet!

Hi friend!

We hope you're having a great week so far. Today we're excited to announce our upcoming Yoga for Healthy Feet online series with Senior Teacher Angela Richter-Gronross. This 4 week online series is on Tuesdays, 9/15 - 10/6, from 12 - 1 p.m.

The feet are an amazing and complicated part of the body. This 4 week online series will focus on the importance of the feet, basic anatomy of the foot, common foot conditions, the four basic foot and ankle movements important in yoga, and of course, yoga poses to benefit the feet.

Angela shares, "Our bodies reflect the strength and flexibility of our feet. Just like a house....if the foundation is problematic, the framework will also be problematic. Come learn what you can do to help adjust and build up your foundation."

No prior yoga experience is necessary; all are welcome! Come with a willingness to explore and discover how to establish your stable foundation!

This series meets via the online platform Zoom, and you can attend with your computer, tablet, or smartphone. In case you're not able to attend at the scheduled time, we'll send you the recordings of the sessions, which will be available to you indefinitely.

See you soon,

Healthy Feet, Healthy Body

When I was a little girl I was very interested in reflexology. I don't remember how I became interested in it, but I do remember I had a chart that showed how the different parts of the feet correlate with the different parts of the body. If one of my parents had a headache, I knew to massage the toes. For tense neck and shoulders I rubbed the "toe necks." For back pain I massaged the arch of the foot.

Now that I'm an adult and a yoga teacher, I understand a different kind of correlation between the feet and the body: The strength and flexibility of the feet affect the strength, alignment, flexibility, and ease of your whole body.

I've had clients reduce or eliminate knee, hip, and back pain with exercises for the feet. Here's a quick and easy 6 step series you can do at home.

feet

  1. Start with your feet hip width apart, toes pointing forward.
  2. Slowly elevate up onto your toes and lower gently back down for 3 repetitions. Work up to comfortably holding in the up position for a 3-5 breaths.
  3. Take 12-14 small steps on your heals, with toes raised.
  4. Take 12-14 small steps on the outer edges of your feet, with the inner edges raised.
  5. Take 12-14 small steps on the inner edges of your feet, with outer edges raised.
  6. From a normal standing position, raise and separate your toes out as wide as possible.

After your feet practice take a break by slowly bending and straightening your knees, then rotate each ankle around a few times in each direction. This practice will help you build strength and flexibility in your feet and increase ease throughout your body.
