As a yoga teacher, I don’t have an agenda to help you, or make you, lose weight. Weight loss, especially for women, is so deeply ingrained in our culture, and I’m often asked “Will yoga help me lose weight?”

Here’s the thing. As a yoga teacher, my highest objective is to help you quiet your mind. I will teach you yoga poses which will strengthen your body. You will practice those yoga poses over and over again as a tool to learn mindfulness. Your mind will begin to quiet. At some point you may want to go deeper and learn breathing. Breathing will make your mind even more quiet.

Doing yoga poses is not going to help you lose weight.

Becoming mindful might help you lose weight. Here’s how.

When you learn mindfulness, you learn to calm your nervous system, which affects the production of hormones in your body. Regulating your hormones could possibly have an effect on your weight.

Also, when you learn mindfulness, that mindfulness will carry over into your real life. You’ll have a better sense of how your body and mind feel at any given time, so you may realize that good quality sleep, regular exercise, proper hydration, eating healthy foods, and/or managing your stress, help you feel better, which may inspire you to adjust some of your current habits.

Please know that weight loss is not my goal for you. Your weight is actually none of my business. My goal is to help you quiet your mind. What you do with your quiet mind is your business.  ❤
